How to Cook A Steak

How to Cook The Perfect Steak
Juicy, tender and mouthwatering...... juices dribbling down your chin as you drool with each tasty and sumptuous mouthful or, as tough as an old shoe ?

However you take your steak I'll bet that you don't want it as tough as leather.
Some of the best steaks I have had have been in the most unlikely looking grill rooms. One memorable steak meal was in a small west coast rural town with dingy lighting, grimy looking walls and plastic oil cloths on the tables that delivered a scrumptious finger licking meal that had us begging for more and determined to cook our own tender, tasty steak at home.

OXO Good Grips Salt and Pepper Grinder Set
  • Buy the best cut you can find - what ever your preference - we like fillet steak for tenderness, sirloin for flavor, T bone is also delicious and porterhouse is fine but sometimes slightly drier.
  • You may like to try them all to see which is your personal favorite.
  • It should look succulent, pink and moist and definitely not pale and dried out
  • Brush your steak with oil and season with salt and pepper
  • Heat a heavy pan until very hot - it should be so that a few drops of oil in it sizzle and set of blue smoke.
  • Place the steak in the pan or on a griddle like a Barbeque and listen for that sizzle - if it doesn't sizzle it is probably not hot enough and will broil and be tougher
  • The steak is ready to turn when you see drops of blood on the surface - test by pressing on the surface and see how much give there is.
  • Turn and cook a further 3 - 4 minutes

Pan Frying Steak How to Pan Fry Steak

Why is pan frying best for small cuts ? Pan Frying is ideal for smaller cuts of steak and great for home cooking as there is less chance of over cooking the steak and making it tough.  Use a heavy skillet or cast iron pan or  alternatively one of those grill type steak grills similar to the ones here. You will notice the Cast Iron 3 Piece one on the left has a lot of great customer reviews.  These pans will last you for years and years and don't contain a lot of coating materials that may be toxic and will give you excellent results every time.
